The Thunder Giant is a creation that melds elements of the Wind God and Thunder God from Japanese Ukiyo-e with a fondness for American-style giants. After extensive research, I chose to integrate these two elements, resulting in a spectacular and awe-inspiring fusion.
To align the Thunder Giant closer with Ukiyo-e style, especially the floating drums often depicted in these artworks, I faced considerable challenges in production. Despite these obstacles, I was determined to make the artwork resonate more with Ukiyo-e, thus I carved a third arm on the back to support the thunder ring, ensuring it didn't appear overly abrupt.
The design inspiration for the giant's thighs came from Japanese drums, inspired by the Maori Haka's intimidating movements, where slapping the thighs produces a loud sound. Thus, the Thunder Giant channels the electricity generated from hitting its thighs to the drums on its back.
Influenced by the Oni's iron club, the Thunder Giant wields this as its iconic weapon, embodying a deep exploration and integration of Japanese cultural elements with an American aesthetic. This entire creative process is a testament to a profound engagement with and blending of cultural motifs.
